Working to Make Grand Rapids a National Leader in Environmental Restoration: Innovative New Non-Profit Partners with Mayor’s Greening Initiative
March 22, 2017
Grand Rapids, MI – Local non-profit organization PLANt for the Future is proud to announce its partnership with Mayor Rosalynn Bliss’ Mayor’s Greening Initiative. This partnership will help to ensure the city reach its goal for a 40 percent tree canopy that and donor dollars can be used as effectively as possible. With its public launch on January 1, this is the first major initiative by PLANt.
Green spaces increase property values, beautify the neighborhood, reduce pollution, and contribute to environmental restoration. Grand Rapids is working to become a national leader in increasing of the green canopy citywide.
PLANt founder and executive director Tammy Jo Budzynski says, “I work in Grand Rapids neighborhoods every day and see what a difference trees can make. I am so excited to be working with Mayor Bliss to make our community a leader in this area!”
About PLANt for the Future
Top Grand Rapids Realtor Tammy Jo Budzynski was helping her clients sign the stacks of paper required in a house closing transaction and joked, “Well, we just killed another tree!” That comment got her thinking about the real cost of reducing green spaces and led her to start the non-profit initiative PLANt for the Future. PLANt is dedicated to working with realtors and the general public to provide funding for tree planting projects. Its mission is “to replenish, maintain, and restore our trees, forest and green spaces from which we consume.” Launched at the beginning of the year, the nonprofit already has 20 participating realtors with a goal of planting a tree for every closing they complete.
About the Mayor’s Greening Initiative
The Mayor’s Greening Initiative continues a commitment made in 2011 by the city to work toward a 40 percent tree canopy cover. Last year, more than 500 volunteers participated in an event to plant trees. This year, the Mayor’s Greening Initiative tree planting will take place in the neighborhood around Martin Luther King Park on Grand Rapids’ Southeast Side.
